Vestibular System and Balance:
The utricle and saccule, also known as the otolithic organs, detect an organism’s orientation. The utricle detects horizontal movement, whereas, the saccule detects vertical acceleration. Asymmetry of movement occurs if receptor impulses are not sending symmetrical signals to the brain.
You be tested for balance if you are experiencing the following issues:
- Gait asymmetry- clumsiness when walking or moving
- Vertigo or dizziness
- Rapid involuntary eye movement which can be linked to a visual or neurological condition
