Air flows both along the floor of the nose between the septum, and the inferior turbinate, and higher in the nose near the middle turbinate. Some air reaches the highest point in the nasal passage where the smell receptors are located.
The paired turbinates are divided by the septum. Turbinates also act as a barrier to protect the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses from pressurized air flow. As well as protecting sinuses, turbinates direct air flow, humidify, heat, and filter air.
What causes swollen turbinates ?
- Abnormal nasal septum
- Other irritants
- Concha Bullosa
How to correct turbinate conditions?
- Somnoplasty alleviates sleep apnea and other nasal obstructions by shrinking obstructing tissues. The procedure averages about 45 minutes.
- Turbinectomy reduces or removes turbinates that cause blockage
- Septoplasty corrects a deviated septum
